Round II 29-30th April 2006
This is the meeting Supertwins usually start their racing season at, but, this season it’s Round II, and as you all know Round I was not good. So I was very interested to see what would happen. Saturday, weather good, sun, slight wind, and the track looked real good, and it was good. We started early, no big oil downs/blow ups/cars upside down etc. The weather held, some people even caught the sun (didn’t they Mrs. Mott?). By teat time/bar o’clock (that’s a drag racing term) everyone had done (or could have) 5 qualifying runs. WOW!!!! That’s more like it! Well done everyone let’s do it again and again.
My 5 runs, well, Tilly II ran perfect, I felt I rode well and most importantly I had great fun, but my times were down, very consistent but down. It’s a pity I don’t race in an ET class.
Still Stalky is who I really want to talk about and his weekend racing the Compupay Express. Stalky was up early, fighting fit and up for the task in hand. As I said the weather was spot on and the meeting was running on time, what could possibly go wrong? The bike did, she played up all way, was having none of it. On the first run Stalky even had to be towed back (good practice for Top Gas) and on a later run she spat out the rear injector. It later turned out to be the pro-light wiring playing up. Good job we had 5 runs! At the end of a very hectic, but, very enjoyable day Stalky was in the number two spot, well don to the crew. All that without our team mechanic, who couldn’t make it – but then it turned out he could have. Oh well – That’s life.
Weather not as nice, but it was dry, which was the main thing. I went out in Round 1 after a wheel-to-wheel battle with Chris – that’s drag racing. Stalky had got through to the semis and I was on the start line to watch his race, only four Outlaw Anglia’s to run and we are on.
The Pop in the left lane let go in a big way, the engine broke and then the gearbox exploded, sending shrapnel inside the car and all over the start line. Ian Norman was lucky to get out of that one. It took 2 hours to clear up which does not do one’s head much good when you are about to race in a semi!. Stalkly held it together and got a race win over Neil, Good boy. A place in the final.
If it hadn’t been for the rain at Round II in April both Stalky and I would have been in the final! Watching the final, I must admit, I felt very proud. The team worked hard and did a good job. ‘Stalky rode it like he stole it’ Dave won the final but Stalky did a good run and got a PB of 10.5 – Well done mate.
So we attended the trophy presentation to watch Stalky get his first trophy – a proud moment.
To sum it up, two excellent days of drag racing and of course the bumper cars, my right arm is still badly bruised. Older and wiser??? I think not, still a mint weekend at Shakespeare County Raceway.
