First Season
After a while I decided the Harley wasn't going fast enough, so whilst attending meetings I had another engine 'worked on'. Once this was complete I did a rapid engine swap. At the end of the season I finished 8th, thus giving me the number STS8 for the next season.
The First Winter
The entire bike was stripped and a new chrome-molly frame built, this being longer and lower than the Harley stock one. I also changed many other features, the back wheel, fairing etc. In total 50lbs in weight was lost from Black Racer (less weight means more horsepower!).
Second Season
After a winter testing session at Santa Pod the re-build really paid off as we were running in the 11s with the new style frame launching became much easier. By the end of the season we were running 11.4s consistently and beating most people off the line. Finishing 5th this year and missing out on 4th by one win. STS 5 the number for next year.
The Second Winter
Not much changed on Black Racer this winter just lots of checks and a top end change.
Third Season
This was a very competitive season and although I was doing quite well on Black Racer. Although I had had the heads gas flowed and had fitted a bell mouth, I was having trouble competing with some of the modern Japanese type of street motorcycles. About two thirds of the way through this season I was offered the use of a Suzuki TL1000S for the rest of the season. I took this offer up, ripped of the exhaust cans and added 10 inches to the swing arm, and lovingly nicknamed her Tilly.
The first time out with Tilly was a great success, and I kept using her for the rest of the season, finishing 2nd in the Supertwins Street Series - hence the STS 2 number for next season.
The Third Winter
I purchased a brand new TL1000S engine and had it heavily worked on by 2KTT, a chap called Steve who works for BAR. I have taken the main frame from a TLS and had a sub-frame especially made. A road race back wheel has been placed in the back of the 10" extended swing arm of last years Tilly. Many TL1000R parts have been used and I have modified many parts to fit them. I am using a Honda 400 CBI front end, and a good friend and engineer has made some 'one off' yokes, rear sets and many parts and brackets for me. A Ducati replica tailpiece is being used but this has also been modified to make it fit.
2001 Season
A very good season for me in round one of Supertwins street I managed to get
1st place as I did in rounds 2, 4 and 5. In round 3 I achieved
2nd place. I was overall 1st in 2001 and have a lovely Winners
trophy on show to prove it.
If you click here you can see the table of results from 2001.
During the season there were many photographs taken of myself and Tilly whilst
racing. These can be found on most of the Drag Racing web sites.
I have also had many mentions in magazines and racing papers.
As Tilly was running so well all she received over the winter was loving care and attention. Her oil was changed and she was given a good polish and a thorough check over.
2002 Season
Last season pretty much followed the pattern of the previous year as I finished 1st place in rounds 1 & 2 and 2nd place in round 3.
Once again I achieved STS 1, something I am hoping will happen again in 2003.
Here we have the table of results from 2002, for those that may be interested.
My ambition this year is to try to beat the Supertwins Street record of 9.98 at 139 mph as well as retaining STS1.
2003 Season
Iain Tomsett, STS 20. Iain has joined the team; it's his first year in drag racing and he has a TL1000 S Suzuki, so welcome aboard Iain.
Kim will be looking after Iain this season, so welcome Ian!
I moved from Street to Street Modified, for a season, mainly to get the hang of an Air Shifter.
Tilly III was under construction, albeit a year later then I had hoped for, so it was good to race different Riders in a higher class. I finished 4th with no NOS.
2004 Season
My first year with my new Top Gas bike, Tilly III, and what a season! Rain, rain, and yes more rain. That wasn't helped by the high-winds, and trying to learn a new bikes habits and tricks in a new class.
A bike that should have run a 9 second, but of course followed the seasonal weathers attitude, and didn't live up to her expectations. I didn't make the progress I'd hoped for, and finished 3rd for the year.
2005 Season
This season I've been mainly doing sprints and drag racing. I've found sprints worth their weight in gold, so many Runs per day and its cheap, so many things you and the team can try, and a good place for Jo to learn startline drills.
The first meeting of the season at Avon Park, first run 9.93 sec. What else, but happy?
As the season progressed I had some real Wheel to Wheel races, and got some good hole shots, and we ended up running a 9.75 sec! I was running 9's about 98% of the time. The terrible news is the other guys were going faster, but we the team that is, had a wonderful season, and ended up 4th thanks to Mr John Floyd (wink wink), but well done to him for his world record and we did have some corking runs together!
